The Garvin-Garvey House, built ca. 1870, is a rare, surviving example of a home constructed and occupied by a freedman in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Located on a bluff high above the May River in Bluffton’s Historic District, the Garvin-Garvey House is a remnant of a once vibrant community of former slaves and freed people during Reconstruction, an era that currently lacks architectural representation in the historic record.
