MERIT AWARD / ADAPTIVE REUSE

Aug Smith On Main

Wonderful to see a contributing structure like this historic commercial building come back into use as homes to urban dwellers who themselves can add vitality to the downtown.

Aug Smith On Main
DESCRIPTION

In 1926, one of the leading regional department stores moved into a new Main Street building designed by Lockwood, Greene, and Co., Engineers in Boston. For over 55 years, the store called this three-story building home, followed by a local furniture company for another 25 years. Abandoned in 2009, the historic structure sat vacant until a local developer and the architect’s design team began planning its rebirth as a mixed-use development in 2016.
