South Atlantic Architects and Former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley Recognized for Design Excellence and Leadership

ASHEVILLE NC − The American Institute of Architects South Atlantic Region (AIA SAR) has announced the winners of its 2019 Design Awards Program. Architects from the region were honored for their work in new construction, adaptive reuse and preservation, interiors, and housing. Students from Clemson University and Georgia Tech were honored for their projects both built and unbuilt. Awards were conferred during the ASPIRE Experience conference on April 14-16 in Asheville, NC. The 2019 Design Awards Jury was chaired by Julie Snow, FAIA, principal of Snow Kreilich Architects in Minneapolis, MN, recipient of the 2018 AIA Firm Award.

Also honored was former Mayor of Charleston, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. who received the 2019 Roger Milliken Award for his role in the revitalization of one of America’s most beloved cities and as founder of the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, which since 1986 has helped transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities.   • Smith Dalia Architects for Phi Gamma Hall Restoration and Adaptive Use – Oxford College of Emory University in Oxford, GA
  • VINES architecture for Cleveland Public Library: MLK Branch in Cleveland, OH
  • Hinman Courtyard Installation Collaborative for student project Hinman Courtyard Installation at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA
