FULL TITLE: Safe, but not Healing: Exploring Nurses’ Perceptions of Inpatient Behavioral Care Environments and Opportunities for Value-Aligned Design
Nursing is grounded in a personalized, comprehensive patient care philosophy that addresses physical and psychosocial dimensions. Recognizing that built environments embody and communicate organizational and cultural values and continuing debates over safety and autonomy in behavioral care, a study of inpatient nurses explored perceptions of their units’ built environments, This session presents the findings of in-depth nurse interviews and a nationwide survey that identified design opportunities for addressing conflicts, primarily arising from balancing built environment safety measures with humanistic care needs. A design resource kit developed with the findings of this study will help healthcare organizations and designers evaluate existing spaces and inform future designs that balance nurse and patient needs. The presentation provides valuable insights for understanding and addressing the complex interplay between built environments, nursing values, and job outcomes, contributing to improved healthcare design and nurse retention.
