James Island PSD Fire Station #1

Task

Conceptualized as a community hub, the new Fire Station Headquarters was seen as growth opportunity for the Sea Island town. Situated along a busy road and just inside a residential neighborhood, the building needed to respond to transition between commercial corridor and residential scale. Through community engagement sessions and meetings with the Fire Chiefs and staff, it became clear that all stakeholders wanted to encourage sustainable practices, support their first responders, and see a building that represents the island vernacular, rather than an imposing monument.
